| Much of the Netherlands is below sea level and has been reclaimed from the sea. Wide dikes protect the country from flooding. In times past, windmills such as these beautifully-preserved examples at Kinderdijke pumped the water back into the sea, but they have now been replaced by modern pumping stations, as shown in one of the photos. |
